As Claude Dornier once summed it up: "The Whale made Dornier." He was, of course, referring to the flying boat Dornier Do J – the sturdy, all-metal seaplane nicknamed "Wal" (German for "whale") that made its maiden flight in 1922 and went on to open up numerous routes for air travel. One of the most successful aircraft in the early days of aviation, the Wal was able to complete transoceanic flights and gained fame as an air mail carrier for Lufthansa – encountering various adventures and setting numerous records along the way.
From July 25, 2012, visitors to the Dornier Museum can marvel at a life-size replica of the legendary Dornier Wal flying boat. Highly skilled specialists worked for over a year on the reconstruction, paying loving attention to every detail to create the most authentic experience for visitors possible. The model, which is 17 metres long and has a wingspan of 22 metres, is the reproduction of a Dornier Wal N25 – the plane in which Roald Amundsen set out to reach the North Pole in 1925. Museum visitors can learn more about the intrepid explorer and the adventures he and his crew faced on their icy expedition in an accompanying special exhibition. And there's plenty of fascinating information on other aspects of the Wal, as well – for example on its use as a commercial aircraft and air mail carrier and on its significance for the Dornier company.

The Dornier Do 24ATT is displayed in the Dornier Museum to show the evolution from the Dornier Wal to the Do 24ATT.
